totally random thoughts of a rubenesque runner

Canola oil is a sham GMO product

I walked today, mostly. I decided to take it easy and do a run tomorrow.

I’ve got my sister, her husband and my two little nieces arriving tonight.  My mom, and older nice are already here, so is my son. They will all be leaving on the cruise tomorrow and then will be gone for about 4 days. I’m praying that the wind will be blowing from the east the whole time they are at sea.

Edit – I’ve been watching the food Network for the last 2 hours. Everyone (except Rachel Ray) is using canola oil. What’s up with that? Canola oil is a  GMO sham oil.

This is worth saving –  The Barefoot Contessa’s carrot salad recipe. Simple ingredients. I bet I can make this in China too. I’ll probably have to make my own homemade mayonnaise, except I would nix the vegetable oil and use olive oil or walnut oil instead –  just as two of the reviewers suggested.

Running With the Wind

Watching where the wind blows in the Gulf.

I had to take 4 days off from running this week, for two reasons:

  1. Mom & Audrey flew in and I had to clean, consolidate and pack.
  2. The wind was blowing from the west – which comes from the direction of the Gulf Oil Disaster.

Now the wind is blowing from the southeast, so I feel more comfortable about getting out there and running. Lord, I pray that you will continue to keep the wind blowing from that direction for many months to come.

I never cared for the west wind, even before the Gulf Oil Disaster. It always seemed to aggravate my allergies.

I ran about 2. 4 miles yesterday, but it didn’t  feel like it. Now I woke up at 4:30AM and I’m going to be heading out the door to FHP. Lately, I’ve been getting there after 8:00AM, which is too late. It get so hot so early down here.

I just checked the news. High of nineties and winds blowing from the southeast/east. Thunderstorms in the afternoons. No hurricanes  to report, just something that blew off the coast of Africa. Nothing organized yet.

The Wildlife is Dwindling in the Gulf

I haven't seen a dolphin in the Gulf since last summer.

Every time I go to FHP, I notice that the wildlife is dwindling. The Cormorants are all skinny and emaciated looking. It has been weeks since I’ve seen a Mullet jump out of the water. Our little slice of the Gulf may not be coated with oil, but the water does have an ominous quicksilver like appearance. I don’t think it is a coincidence.

I did three and a half times around the island today at FHP. That is roughly 2.8 miles. It was hot, hot, hot today! I didn’t get there until about 8:30AM, which is too late especially since all the cloud cover is gone.

I listened to … which was exactly my level today. I spent some time lamenting that fact, especially when Methusala passed me by. I’m so incredibly motivated because my butt is shrinking! I’m setting my alarm for 6:00AM tomorrow. Even if I knock out … I figure I’m still ahead of the game. Maybe it will kick start my metabolism which has been in the doldrums since I quit breast feeding my son about 17 and a half years ago.

I’m deliberately sticking to low calorie, high nutrient food. I can eat more without adding all the calories. I just get squeamish when I cut into one of those GMO tomatoes. It turns my stomach. They don’t even taste like tomatoes anymore. The younger folk have no idea what I’m talking about. I get a glassy eye stare whenever I broach the subject. So sad…

Edit: The tomatoes in China are awesome! No GMO produce here.

Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another day

Rainy days and Mondays

2 days of rain is messing up my training schedule. Luckily, it looks like from Tuesday on, the rain percentage is considerably reduced and will be limited to the usual afternoon thunderstorm activity. They don’t call us “Thunderstorm Alley” for nothing, ‘ya know.

Although, there looks like there will be a small window of no rain coming up here in the next 15 minutes. I don’t know how long it will last and there is a line of heavy showers behind it. I’m tempted to head out to FHP, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow. Normally, I would just go for it, but the rain is coming from the west, which is the direction of the Gulf Oil Spill. Maybe there will be a break later on…

In the meantime, those dishes aren’t gonna wash themselves.
